CoinJoin did not die. It lost its head and grew several.

Samourai's founders were arrested in April 2024 and sentenced in late 2025 to five and four years; the servers were seized and Sparrow removed the integration. zkSNACKs shut down Wasabi's default coordinator in June 2024. Both were single points of failure, and both failed.

What replaced them has no single point to seize. Wasabi now runs against community coordinators — around nine appeared within days of the shutdown. Ashigaru, an anonymous fork of Samourai, relaunched Whirlpool in June 2025 with two pools and a 5% entry fee. Neither arrangement is as convenient as what it replaced. Both are much harder to switch off.

Be clear-eyed about the trade. A community coordinator is a stranger with an interest in your transaction graph, and picking one is now a decision you are making whether you notice it or not. Convenience moved from the tool to the user, and so did the responsibility.

What this means in practice: if you use CoinJoin, know which coordinator you use and why you chose it. "The default" is no longer an answer, because there is no longer a default.
